Pre-allocated arts funding slashed due to downturn

Victoria, Australia: The City of Yarra recently cut $80,000 worth of arts funding which had already been allocated in this year's budget, arguing that they can't afford to fund the arts in a time of economic downturn.

Naomi Cass, director of the Australian Centre for Contemporary Photography has endorsed an Open Letter asking council to reconsider its decision, citing important economic factors such as the role art plays in stregthening the economy and reducing poverty. The letter also warns of the danger this creates by setting a precedent “at a time when the arts are more necessary than ever”.

The CCP, who do not have any applications for funds currently with the Council, urge those who wish to protect arts funding to sign the Open Letter at
