In Disscomobulation, blue-collar iconography is combined with technological fetishes, to reveal obvious truths. Through portraying incompatible content, Friedrich hopes to achieve a charismatic yet absurd compositional dissimilarity.
Friedrich’s large scale portraits project humanity’s obsessive attempts to up-grade what is perceived as obsolete, to re-establish what already exists. Friedrich’s work is situated largely within the realm of narrative painting, with comments about technological restructuring. His work is based on uncertainty, anxiety and the increased tension that bandage solutions generate, Friedrich posits that ‘progression’ seems to be chasing its own tail.
Kevin Friedrich was born in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan and currently lives and works in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Freidrich’s work has been exhibited in Ontario, New Brunswich, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Minneapolis.
