Gallery 1 : Motherland
Charlie Brophy

What continues to draw me back to the Motherland is the magnetic energy of India; a country that is entrenched in rich traditions amongst a world saturated in colour. In India, my eyes are captivated by a vivacious energy that lingers in the hustle and bustle of the streets. It is a playground of juxtapositions whereby the subtleties of the human experience are heightened. I continue to gravitate towards its soulful land to reconnect with my roots.

I returned to India to reconnect with my Grandfather’s heritage in 2016, shortly after he passed away. He spent forty-five years of his life there before migrating to Australia. His brilliant and creative mind inspired my work from the age of sixteen, as he became the main subject of my portraits.

Motherland is a body of work that explores my unwavering connection to India, shot on 35mm film. I am drawn to ‘painting with light’ to celebrate moments in time that may otherwise be overlooked. What others might perceive as ordinary is often where I find the most intrinsic beauty of storytelling.

Gallery 2-3 : The New World Standard
Headache Stencil

In the world where different types of government exist, living conditions in each country vary. Still, many countries in Asia have been ruled by dictators for generations after generations so much so that the new standard has risen.
People have to be admittedly happy as if the standard they’re living in is the real one.
