Now in its sixth year NGV Kids on Tour is the Gallery’s most expansive yet with almost 70 venues in metropolitan and regional Victoria hosting the NGV event for their local community. Highlights include uncovering the secrets to the optical illusions in M. C. Escher’s intricate works and the opportunity for children to create their own artworks influenced by William Wegman, who is renowned for his iconic and witty photographs of Weimaraners reflecting art history and fashion.

Featuring workshops inspired by NGV’s summer exhibitions including Escher X nendo | Between Two Worlds and William Wegman: Being Human, the program aims to connect local communities with the NGV’s dynamic summer exhibition program by touring to local galleries or community centres.

Tony Ellwood AM, Director, NGV said, ‘The Gallery has a long standing commitment to making art more accessible to children and families across the state. The 2019 NGV Kids on Tour program is our biggest yet and is designed to foster creativity and learning by bringing these opportunities to those who may not be able to visit central Melbourne.’

The NGV Kids on Tour initiative will be held throughout the 2019 school holidays in January. Interested families are encouraged to check the website at NGV.MELBOURNE/KIDS to locate their nearest venue where they can participate in the following workshops and activities:

INCREDIBLE ILLUSIONS: Inspired by Escher X nendo | Between Two Worlds

Children are invited to create their own visual illusions inspired by the detailed prints of M. C. Escher. The Incredible Illusions workbook teaches kids the tricks behind some of these mind-bending optical illusions, giving them the chance to design their own illusionary work of art.

DOG’S LIFE: Inspired by William Wegman: Being Human

Inspired by the artist’s playful photography and popular children’s book, NGV Kids have collaborated with William Wegman to create a collage and drawing activity starring Wegman’s own beloved Weimaraners.

TERRIFIC TESSELLATIONS: Inspired by Escher X nendo | Between Two Worlds

This hands-on activity encourages children to make their own 3D work of art inspired by Escher’s tessellation patterns. Colourful designs are brought to life by sculpting patterns into a tetrahedron shape.

BUILD YOUR TOWN: Inspired by New York! New York! for Kids

Kids can use brightly coloured materials to build their own town or to create a fantasy landscape using their imagination.

2019 NGV Kids on Tour activities are FREE and will take place during the summer school holidays, running in conjunction with NGV Kids Summer Festival from Saturday 5 January to Sunday 13 January 2019. For further information, please visit the NGV website: NGV.MELBOURNE/KIDS
