FRONT & BACK GALLERIES : : A PORTRAIT OF A PAINTER group show

Off the Kerb invites a group of artists in this curated show titled, “A Portrait of a Painter”. Artists are asked to portray a contemporary painter, based locally or internationally or one from history. They are muse. They inspire you. Your subject must work solely as a painter (working in oils, watercolour, gouache, acrylic, ink and aerosol). The group of artists chosen for this exhibition work in a range of media to present this rich, cohesive exhibition.

SIDE GALLERY : : LISTING STATUS by Sophie Lesin

“Listing Status” is a study of native or abundant flora and fauna, all of which we stand to lose due to threats of climate change and human neglect. Pollution, over-fishing, global warming and human interference are all threats to our diverse landscape and faunas. A series of ink and graphite works, Listing Status serves as a preventative: as an aid to understand the beautiful and complex ecosystem that is at risk if our society and governments do not take the necessary steps and precautions to reverse the damage we have enacted.

UPSTAIRS GALLERY : : ANON MEMENTO by Thomas Hancock

“Anon Memento” is a selection of portraits and figure studies I’ve produced since moving to Melbourne in 2017. Beginning as an almost documentary series of street performers the works have evolved into a kind of staged snapshot of anonymous contemporary figures. I have always been interested in painters of contemporary life such as the Dutch painters of the Golden Age, particularly the rise in genre painting and still life around that time. The show offers an overly formalized view of what could be a single moment, punctuated by an absence of background setting and uncanny compositions.
