By applying thin dripping washes of watercolour and acrylic paint onto plastic sheets, he emphasises the fragility and ephemerality of both his materials and subject. And as we physically move through his works, the images drift in response to our presence. Hsu uses these quiet gestures to consider home as not a fixed tangible space, but rather something more emotional, mutable, remembered and impermanent.
Chiao-Yen Hsu was born in Chiayi, Taiwan, and graduated from the Graduate Institute of Plastic Arts at the Tainan National University of the Arts. Yen’s mixed media installations are centered around ideas of the growth and decline of time, trace, and the manipulation of materials and space. Yen was a finalist in the 2016 Taipei Arts Award, and has held solo exhibitions at Project Fulfil Art Space and the Taipei Artist Village in Taipei.
Chaio-Yen Hsu is the recipient of the 2019 Taiwanese Arts Residency Exchange, supported by RMIT University and the Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts of Taipei National University of the Arts.
