Walking the Wood 2019 is the newest and most vibrant Arts & Culture Festival to emerge from the creative epicentre of City of Yarra.

With the burgeoning of galleries, cafes, bars , Circus Oz and the Melba Spiegeltent and Collingwood Arts precinct (CAP) in this lower Johnston Street, Collingwood locale, Walking the Wood aims to celebrate, showcase and share in its extensive offering to visitors near and far. Walking the Wood will cement Collingwood’s presence in Melbourne’s arts and cultural landscape.

Walking the Wood kicks off by opening two exhibitions on Friday 22nd November 2019 from 6pm – 9pm – hosted by the two main galleries within walking distance of each other – Backwoods and Off the Kerb. Backwoods Gallery will showcase Internationally renowned painter and muralist Robert Bowers and cinematic photographer, Tom Blachford. Off the Kerb will open new shows by the street artist working in miniature figurines, Tinky, as well as prominent street artist, Barek.

Additionally, on Friday 22nd November 6pm-9pm, the Melba Spiegeltent will be open to the public, showcasing 18 of Melbourne’s most vibrant creators and makers with a variety of offerings from screen printed t’shirts to ceramic wares and textiles. The Melba bar will be open serving drinks to thirsty punters throughout the night. The Melba Artists Market will also be open during the day on Saturday 23rd November from 11am -5pm.

On Saturday 23rd November 2019 from 11am Walking the Wood hosts a ticketed guided street art tour by Melbourne Street Tours of Collingwood’s dynamic street art and graffiti covered lane-ways. You will hear first-hand about who the artists are, the current influences and social issues, technical aspects involved in spray painting, stencil art and paste-ups, and the significant role street artists have played in making Melbourne one of the most important destinations worldwide for street art. Fittingly your tour finishes at the World Heritage listed Keith Haring mural on Johnston Street.
Melbourne Street Art Tours are the first and only street art tours in Australia run by street artists.

At 2pm on the 23rd November one of Melbourne’s fastest growing street artist, Tinky will give an artist talk at Off the Kerb Gallery. She uses discarded, vintage, or over-sized objects within her miniature dioramas, so that each scene has a comedic undertone, exaggerated messages, or emphasizes playful folly. Tinky’s canvas is the gritty street landscapes, where laneway drains or cracks in a wall morph into her comical miniature worlds. This will be followed by an artist talk at 3:15pm by Dr Nyein Chan Aung internationally award-winning Industrial Designer at Black Cat Gallery. His digital painting “The Late Supper” has been selected as the launch tram for Melbourne International Arts’ Festival’s 2019 art trams.

Walking the Woods will culminate on Saturday 23rd November 2019 5pm till late in an after-party at Melbourne’s newest microbrewery, Bodriggy.
