SOLO SHOW : Nyein Who Makes Cool Stuff
Nyein Chan Aung

Dr Nyein Chan Aung is an internationally award-winning Industrial Designer, Design Researcher and Artist. As an artist, Nyein seeks to express what he refers to as “subtle fantasy” where his Art straightforwardly shows their narrative at first. However, if the viewer were to dive deeper, she will discover elements that are out of place. Some are chronologically misplaced, some defy physics, and some are drawn together where they should never meet in real life.

“Nyein Who Makes Cool Stuff” is Nyein’s inaugural solo exhibition of his Art. A curated selection from his body of work to date will be shown, and visitors will see for the first time where his rawest source of inspiration comes from.

Nyein was born in Myanmar and has studied and practised Art and Design in The United States, Myanmar, and Australia.
He began explorations in drawing, painting and photography around the age of twelve. He works primarily with graphite, watercolour, and ink. He received his Associate degree from the Art Institute of Seattle (USA) and his Bachelor degree from the University of Technology Sydney (Australia). His digital painting “The Late Supper” has been selected as the launch tram for Melbourne International Arts’ Festival’s 2019 art trams.

Nyein completed his PhD in Industrial Design with Monash University where he looked into improving the in-flight sleep
of economy class passengers through the design of the aircraft cabin. As a designer, Nyein intends to position himself as a design expert at the intersection of med-tech and mobility. Nyein has been designing products professionally since 2005 and has achieved notable recognition for products in aerospace, healthcare and camping. Nyein is currently a Senior Design Researcher (Practice-based) at Monash Art Design and Architecture’s (MADA) Health Collab. He is also a sessional lecturer at MADA in Industrial Design and Interaction Design.

Featured Art
The Late Supper by Nyein Chan Aung. The Late Supper is an interpretation of the iconic painting The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci. The illustration depicts people having supper; however, features unknown customers at Melbourne’s renowned Supper Inn Chinese restaurant instead of Jesus Christ with his apostles. The work was created for the iconic Melbourne Art Trams program (2019) and was selected to be the launch tram.
