In January 2018 a false ballistic missile scare in Hawaii caused a series of warnings – initially for the alert followed by a de-escalation to ‘There is No Threat’. The language of the ‘non-threat’ threat in what appears to be a safe environment is something familiar to Michelle Hamer, as a woman.
‘Are You Having A Good Night?’ is a new series of works hand-stitched and hand-drawn by the artist, exploring the prevalence of threatening language in everyday life particularly (but not exclusively) towards women.

Michelle Hamer’s work explores fears and aspirations of everyday language and years she has collected threatening language directed at herself and others. Sometimes it is directly aggressive or patronising but more often it is delivered with overt defensive declarations as pre-emptive justifications of its non-threatening nature.
For the first time, she has created three sets of stitched works created in triplicate. Vivid tropical Hawaiian landscapes; Australian bush scenes and evening landscape with embedded LED signage. One scene in each triptych is based on an actual image.

Further smaller works and drawn works also reflect the utter everydayness of threats, embedded power, the roles we all play in it and the irony and complexity of language amidst a global #metoo moment.

Captured digitally in an instant, the analogue slowness of stitching allows Hamer, as the artist, and for audiences, to be present in these everyday and even seemingly idealised moments and begin to notice the impact of the language that surrounds us.
