While growing up in the area, Jellie felt torn between staying and leaving, between travelling and dwelling, between city and country. Through the series, Jellie addresses her ambivalent feelings about growing up in a typical regional Australian town, while also connecting with the people who have chosen to embrace an unassuming lifestyle. The work provides a contrast to the usual touristic and clichéd imagery of Warrnambool, showing grey skies, stagnant streets, and a desolate coastline. Drawing on the traditions of long-form documentary photography, Jellie has created a series that both questions and celebrates rural living.
