Salsjo employs aural and visual technologies to explore moments of catharsis, blending elements to create strangely linked narratives between materiality, image and movement.

For her exhibition at AWARS, Salsjo will present a series of short films that document elderly people reading a written exchange between two young people. The exchange explores feelings of desperation and craving, with moments of licentiousness, yet their efforts to differentiate love and sex are palpable. The films will be projected within an immersive installation constructed by Salsjo and designed to ‘break-down and build-up’ the interpretation of her films.

Mia Salsjo has a Bachelor of Music Performance and Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons) both the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA). She is currently undertaking a Masters of Fine Art also at the VCA and is a recipient of the prestigious Melbourne Research Scholarship. Her work has been featured in Photofile, Artlink and The Age and she currently sits on the Program Committee of West Space in Melbourne. Recent solo projects include BlowHoles (OriFiCe SweEt), West Space, Vic, 2008, Prosthetic Animal presented in Bone Singer,Cube 37, Frankston Arts Centre, Vic, 2008, Subdivision, Ocular Lab, Vic, 2007.

The AWARS Projects Program is a new arm of artistic programming that seeks to create exhibition opportunities, outside of the Application-based Program, for artists based beyond the region who have not previously exhibited within central Victoria. The AWARS Projects Program will endeavour to expand the exhibiting artists’ peer networks and expose AWARS members and audience to innovative, diverse and critically engaged art practices.
