30x40

A snapshot of contemporary Australian art in 2009

30x40 is an exhibition that aims to create a ‘snapshot’ of Australian contemporary art in 2009. By commissioning a series of works from artists across Australia, we intend to capture the present state of contemporary art and the artists who define it. With a focus on emerging artists, rising stars, and established mid-career artists, 30x40 represents some of Australia's best contemporary art.

Providing a clear and concise overview of the Australian art scene right now; in all its eclectic diversity; the exhibition allows us to stand back and reflect on the art world we currently inhabit, and its place and meaning in the history of Australian art in general. Addressing questions such as what are the defining factors that best describe or represent the art of the moment and what, in the future, will be considered the defining emerging artistic contributions of 2009?, 30×40 asks the viewer to consider its importance in relation to both the past and the future.

Prescriptive only in terms of size (all works included in the show measure 30 × 40 cm), we are presented with an exhibition that provides a multi-faceted and diverse look at the wide variety of styles, mediums, and emerging genres all falling under the umbrella of Australian contemporary art. 30×40 provides national coverage of the art and artists who have set the bar for the contemporary Australian art scene in 2009.

30×40 will cover a range of medias including painting, drawing, photography and printmaking, and will feature names such as Margaret Ackland, Ben Ali Ong, Kieran Antill, Sam Ash, Susan Baird, Claire Bridge, Megan Campbell, David Disher, Thor Engelstad, Erin Flannery, Jane Fontane, Tarli Glover, Peter James Hewitt, William Holt, Gabrielle Jones, Lewie JPD, Simon Lovelace, Kent Mathews, Frank Malerba, Kim Nelson, Christine Polowyj, Ben Rak, David Ralph, Marc Renshaw, Joseph Rolella, Peter Smets, David Spencer, Paola Talbert, Steve Tyerman, Charly Wrencher and Amanda Van Gils.

Exhibition runs from the 4th June until 4th July, 2009.
