The exhibition follows in the tradition of the French Impressionists of the 1860’s. Manet’s painting Dejeuner sur l’Herbe was rejected by the reactionary French Academy, thus creating the impetus for the inaugural Salon des Refuses in 1864 – a break-away exhibition which also featured works by Cezanne, Pissarro and Whistler. Interestingly, these painters all went on to fame, whereas the painters selected by the Salon proper, and the judges, have all been lost to history.
