I’m Fine

I’m Fine is a site-specific installation located in the cafeteria of Orygen Youth Health Centre. Conceived from collective experiences of mental illness, the work reflects on the nature of the self in relation to sickness and health.

I’m Fine is an installation in two parts. A large-scale sculpture transforms one of Orygen’s cafeteria tables into a meditation on the conflicted internal states which characterise many mental illnesses, and which many of us navigate from time to time, blurring the boundaries which delineate those ‘inside’ the health system from those we consider to be safely ‘outside’ it.

Delaney has also produced a series of coffee mugs, emblazoned with the side-effects caused by a number of commonly-available medications. These are dispersed throughout the cafeteria, and through the Centre itself. By rendering some of the most private and embarrassing aspects of these treatments as a public ‘conversation topic’, I’m Fine again questions the extent to which our culture compels us to internalise and contain key aspects of ourselves.

There is a social energy that is exerted in everyday conversation to avoid the topic of mental illness. By applying methods of interference and inversion upon found materials, I’m Fine emphasises the irregularities inherent in social regulation. It communicates the rub between the trauma and the treatment, and attempts to create something other than fear within the cultural underworld of mental illness.
