Rebecca weaves elements of fairy tales and the forests of Germany with that of suburban Melbourne in order to reflect her own woven memory of the two places and the sense of ‘coming home’ she experiences when being part of each landscape.

Born in Melbourne in 1979, Rebecca completed her bachelor of fine art at Victorian College of the Arts. Since then she has participated in several group shows and two solo exhibitions. Rebecca has also found the time to travel extensively. Her travels to Europe, in particular the southern parts of Germany, inspire the theme for this body of work. It was here that she felt a connection with the landscape as it prompted a strange sense of familiarity and nostalgia. Realising that her only experience of such places was from childhood fairy tales and movies highlighted the feeling that clear distinctions can seldom be made between memories generated through direct experience and those that are mechanically mediated through story books and films. Rebecca weaves elements of fairy tales and the forests of Germany with that of suburban Melbourne in order to reflect her own woven memory of the two places and the sense of ‘coming home’ she experiences when being part of each landscape.
