Jessica Honey & Harry Metcalf – ‘One Armed Man Applauds the Kindness of Others’

Jessica Honey’s work looks at the strange genre of children’s fashion media and explores the process of psychological transference in relation to portraiture and print media. Through painted portraits a crossover between child and adult content is exposed in the child’s self-awareness, direct gaze, facial expression, posture and performance of adult roles.

Surface quality and a lightness of touch in these works explores the artificiality of the world these children inhabit, and attempts to tread close to a kind of ‘graphic art’ sensibility while avoiding the didactic territory that entails.

Via the simulacra of celebrities, Harry Metcalf toys with a series of visual paradoxes, i.e. detail in distance / obscurity in nearness. Like their “real-world” counterparts, the figures in these paintings announce themselves from a distant periphery, yet their illusion and value diminishes as one takes a closer look. The notion of celebrity exists as a source of light entertainment, yet – on some level – acts as a projection of our own ideals, which suggest the repression of violence, sexuality and perversion.
