The Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) presents Notes on Pictures, a screening and Q&A with improvised music video creator, Vincent Moon, on Sunday 15 January 2012.

The nomadic French filmmaker will screen his short films in ACMI’s intimate Studio 1 before a discussion of his pioneering work in music and the moving image.

The screening will include selected videos from Take Away Shows, an ongoing series of outdoor or ‘wild’ documentaries cut together from improvised video sessions with musicians shot around the world. Musicians who have featured in this series since it began in 2006 include; Arcade Fire, Sufjan Stevens, Beirut, Grizzly Bear, Mumford & Sons, Fleet Foxes, Sigur Ros, Noah and the Whale, Bon Iver, The Shins, Japanese ‘extreme folk’ singer Kazuki Tomokawa and Australia’s own Architecture in Helsinki. There are now over 200 videos in Moon’s Take Away Shows collection.

For over a decade, Vincent Moon (real name Mathieu Saura) has been exploring everyday life with camera in hand, in a simple, lo-fi way. Moon’s life has been an adventure in capturing creativity and music on film and video – first with his friends as subjects and now with some of this generation’s most captivating musicians. As well as the Take Away Shows film series, Moon has worked on music videos with artist such REM and The National. His organic style incorporates intimate, fragile, dancing frames and shadowy long shots; his work has quietly revolutionised the aesthetic of the music video and inspired a generation of young filmmakers.

ACMI Screen Events Manager Helen Simondson says that Notes on Pictures is a wonderful opportunity to hear from Moon himself, who typically specialises in telling the stories of others. “It is fantastic that ACMI can take advantage of Vincent Moon’s visit to Australia for the Sugar Mountain Festival to offer audiences an insight into his creative process via this screening and talk. It is always interesting to hear directly from an artist about their practice but Moon’s unique experience working with some of the world’s most innovative musicians to fuse sound and image in such a distinctive style makes this a fascinating event for everyone from fellow creatives to music lovers.”

The Notes on Pictures: Vincent Moon screening and Q&A will be held at ACMI on Sunday 15 January from 4pm. For more information and tickets, please visit;
