Bordeaux Hyatt: Faux Pas

Jessica Honey

Bordeaux Hyatt: Faux Pas is Jessica Honey’s first solo show after recently graduating with a Masters of Fine Art from RMIT University. Honey’s portraits of children and tweens taken from high-end children’s fashion media, such as Vogue Bambini, parallel the winning aesthetics of faux aristocracy, wealth and class as displayed in print media.

Art Exhibition previously on at Paradise Hills in Victoria, Australia.

These portraits of ‘trophy children’ consider how social status and adult roles are evident through the children’s posture, facial expression, direct gaze, and attire. Here references to wealth, class and a status-anxiety aficionado are coupled with formalist sensibilities and a propensity for hyper-aestheticism; a saccharine sweet palette, a deft lightness of touch and an astute attention to surface. The expressions of disdain or an air of indifference on the children’s faces belie their age and distinguish them as anything but middle-class.
