The Head On Portrait Prize is the nation’s major innovative showcase for Australian portrait photography, reflecting a vibrant, diverse cross-section of new and traditional photographic practices. The Prize’s main selection criteria are the quality and impact of the image, rather than the celebrity of the photographer or subject.

The Head On Portrait Prize is regarded by the arts community and industry as Australia’s most important photographic portrait prize.

As part of the Head On Photo Festival, the Australian Centre for Photography will host an exhibition of the finalists of the 2012 Head On Portrait Prize.

The judges for the 2012 Prize are Tamara Dean, a multi award-winning photographer, Shaune Lakin, Gallery Director, Monash Gallery of Art, Robbie Buck, ABC Radio National presenter and Moshe Rosenzveig, Head On Director. The Critic’s Prize will be selected by Robert McFarlane.

Head On was founded by Moshe Rosenzveig in 2004 as an independent national photographic portrait competition. Since then, Head On has grown rapidly and now operates as a public not-for-profit festival.

Head On is the largest photo festival in Australia with 200 photographic exhibitions, events and seminars staged in Sydney between 4 May and 3 June 2012.
