Internationally acclaimed expatriate South Australian artist Jeffrey Smart is one of Australia’s most important living painters. This major exhibition gives due recognition to Smart’s exceptional achievements over a long life in art, and his exemplary contribution to Australian painting.

The survey draws on a large range of works from Smart’s oeuvre, to illuminate the consistent artistic and technical qualities that animate his art, and to reveal the sustained vision that has deservedly grown his reputation over several decades.

The exhibition celebrates the artist’s special links to the University of South Australia as one of the South Australian School of Art’s most acclaimed alumni and is presented as a major component of UniSA’s 21st anniversary celebrations.

This is the perfect opportunity to bring the artist’s vision home to Adelaide where it all started as, for the first time, it is possible to define his career from beginning to end.

Master of Stillness is showing concurrently across two Adelaide venues: Carrick Hill presents the artist’s early work, produced in Adelaide during the 1940s; while the Samstag Museum presents iconic and unique works created by Smart in Sydney from 1951 and later in Italy where he still resides.

Master of Stillness, has the benefit of respected curator (and UniSA alumnus) Barry Pearce’s long friendship and professional association with Smart, which informs a deep appreciation of the artist’s work, methods and motivations. Now ninety years of age, it is appropriate and timely that Jeffrey Smart be honoured in his hometown of Adelaide, where his education and journey began.

Master of Stillness: Jeffrey Smart paintings 1940-2011 is an Anne & Gordon Samstag Museum of Art and Carrick Hill exhibition in partnership with TarraWarra Museum of Art.

A major publication by Wakefield Press will accompany the exhibition.
