UNIT A, Marcus Jansen’s open studio Headquarters, will celebrating it’s one year anniversary during Art Walk on April 5. 2013 at its location on 1922 Evans ave, unit A, Fort Myers Fl 33901 during a public reception and extraviganza that will include DJ, a special guest artist appearance and after party during Art Walk. The Party is a public event but entry is up to 140 people at a time, so get there early.

Unit A is the newest most talked about cutting edge art space in Downtown. It opened in March of 2012 after internationally renown artist and fort Myers resident Marcus Jansen decided to transform part of his studio building from a forgotten church into the largest private art space of it’s kind in SW Florida. It’s the first space to open in the now been dubbed emerging “Warehouse Art district” in Downtown Fort Myers. Local Art community leaders have already held meetings about possible artists lofts and non for profit warehouse space for the arts having a place in that region using UNIT A as a catalyst to do so.

“The space is here because our committed members believed in the mission of it and decided to be unselfishly committed to the cause and stick to it”," said Jansen. The name UNIT A does not just refer to it’s location, but also represents a small unit of individuals that believe in the space’s mission and work closely together. UNIT A opened just in time of local Author and Historian Gerri Reaves Ph.D, new book release “Legendary Locals of Fort Myers,” where Jansen is featured in among other visonaries including Robert Rauschenberg and Henry Ford in the community promptly on the cover.

Besides celebrating the Fort Myers community itself who has clearly shown that a space like this is wanted and needed, all of the members that assisted in Jansen’s vision then and now will be celebrated at the Anniversary on April 5th. Members include Chrisitine Gruber,Tonda Soisson Lawson, Nick Soisson, Lelia and Ray Soission as well as Amanda Plummer, Bob Encarnacion, Michi’s Arts & Craft and Laszlo Hagymasi from Budapest Hungary who has worked with Jansen for almost fifteen years and will be part of the UNIT’s continuing operations.

Since March 2012, the UNIT has hosted either through private invitation or rentals some of the most exciting events in Downtown fort Myers, including Sonic Combine, recommended by local artist and friend Michael Saint Amand, a performance An artistic night of sound, visuals & art celebrating Cage, Cunningham, Mercer & Rauschenberg through Rauschenberg’s close musician friends, Kat Epple, Lawrence Voytek & Lorrie Getford and of course the recent Urban Decaydence event curated by Lydia Black from the The Alliance for the Arts and Pam Beckman last year that thanks to them and UNIT A’s Danielle Masseria and Lia Martino, left an ever lasting impression on the Fort Myers art community. The same year, during Jansen’s Absolut Vodka signing, Jansen was awarded the “key to the city” by Mayor Henderson at Blush Downtown. “UNIT A is being requested more and more for private rentals, we are now weeding through our propositions.” Says Bob Encarnacion, Event Coordinator. But that’s not all.

UNIT A has taken on two new members of international scope. Both are filling the previously director position that was held briefly. UNIT A is very excited to announce it’s new members which include Lia Martino who is now Jansen’s Artist Liaison, a former Gallery owner and internationally famous super model from Beverly Hills California who worked closely with Giorgio Armani and Karl Lagerfeld for years. "Lia he has traveled to countries like Berlin, Milan, Paris, London and most other parts of Europe, Asia and South America. “She brings an extensive amount of experience and information from fashion and arts with her and is very passionate about the UNIT’s mission,” said Jansen.

The other new Unit A member is artist Jonas Striner, Stirner worked directly with artist Robert Rauschenberg as an Artist Assistant for over fourteen years on Captiva island. From Digital imaging to Fabrication, he has knowledge of all phases of Fine Art production. Produced one hundred plus Fine Art Print Addition with Art Work By Shepard Fairey to benefit New York City Coalition for the Homeless. Restored original photos for the book published in 2011 titled “Robert Rauschenberg Photographs 1949-1962” and created the original website for the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. Jonas will be collaborating with Jansen on projects and events starting 2013 and is also dedicated to seeing the UNIT prosper in fort Myers for the benefit of the community. “Although we typically do not represent artists at UNIT A, Jonas will also be showing his sculptures at UNIT A at the opening Anniversary celebration as a special guest. We are very excited to have Jonas, his involvement is a great asset to our team.” Lia Martino said.
