Over the last number of years Object: Australian Design Centre has explored many notions of design. From Freestyle: new Australian design for living in 2006 to HYPERCLAY: Contemporary Ceramics in 2011, Object has presented some of the most exciting current emerging and established practitioners working today.

But what’s next? What does the future hold?

From data to health, architecture to fashion, and in many unexpected spaces in between, who is working on the ’cusp’ of thinking in their field, and what is driving their work?

With a forward-looking bent, CUSP: Designing into the Next Decade recognises that design can evolve, and that, while outcomes are always desired, often it is the process that provides the greatest illustration. For this reason, CUSP will be anchored by a set of ideas, or ‘visions’, of what drives each designer. Rather than being about objects, CUSP becomes about practice.

CUSP has been imagined and developed as a three-year creative program, with seven physical iterations around Australia from early 2013 to early 2015. In addition to the exhibition, which will spotlight some outcomes emblematic of each designer’s practice, there will be ways for audiences to directly engage and interact with the designers and the ideas that guide their work.

The featured designers include Chris Bosse (NSW), Healthabitat (NSW), Leah Heiss (VIC), Anupama Kundoo (QLD), Material By Product (VIC), Greg More (VIC), Floyd Mueller (VIC), Stephen Mushin (VIC), Alison Page (NSW), George Khut (NSW), Super Critical Mass (QLD and NSW) and Mari Velonaki (NSW).

Launching later this year, a standalone website will play host to a vast array of developing content. The CUSP website will be an active component, growing and demonstrating the changing nature of CUSP as a constantly moving creative program.

More information on designers, locations for the exhibition installations, times, dates and details for the public experiences, and launch information for the digital elements will be updated over coming weeks and months. Stay tuned to Object Eye for information on the development of the program.
