From July 2013 through early 2016, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is embarking upon an ambitious schedule of exhibitions and public programs throughout the Greater Bay Area while the museum's building in downtown San Francisco undergoes a major expansion.

As part of this program the museum is bringing national and international artists to the Silicon Valley community of Los Altos in a unique multisite exhibition occupying both indoor and outdoor locations throughout the downtown Los Altos area.

Under the direction of the Visitor and Member Services Manager, the Los Altos Visitor and Member Services Supervisor represents the museum and is responsible for overseeing Project Los Altos frontline operations, ensuring that visitors to the exhibition receive the highest standard of customer service.


Supervises, directs, trains, and motivates the Los Altos Gallery Assistant team to welcome Project Los Altos visitors, facilitate an excellent visitor experience with the multi-site exhibition, fulfill membership revenue goals, and manage efficient day-to-day exhibition operations.

Represents SFMOMA and the City of Los Altos by providing information on SFMOMA, Los Altos, the Project Los Altos exhibition, the museum’s expansion plans and interim off-site programs, and the museum’s membership program.

Ensures that onsite customer service issues are resolved professionally, promptly, and respectfully. Maintains positive public relations to secure the reputation of the SFMOMA as one of the highest caliber of world class art and service standards.

Oversees iPad-based group check-in and museum membership sales.

Assists with the creation of onsite operational procedures, customer service standards, sales procedures and related training materials for Gallery Assistant team.

Ensures that all Project Los Altos sites are opened, closed, and staffed as scheduled. Ensures each location is tidy, presentable, and stocked with necessary equipment and supplies.

Ensures that multimedia exhibitions and inflatable art installations are set up each morning and shut down each evening.

Tracks and reports on daily exhibition attendance.

Actively promotes and sells SFMOMA memberships.

Staffs special events for SFMOMA members, including evening and weekend events, as required.

Performs other duties as assigned.


Education and Training: An undergraduate degree or equivalent experience.

Work Experience: Minimum two years in sales and customer service, and one year of supervisory experience. Familiarity with museum or gallery operations and/or museum membership programs and customer services is preferred. Bi- or multi- lingual candidates strongly encouraged to apply.

Skills and Experience:

Strong knowledge of, or interest in, visual art, in particular modern and contemporary art.

Proficiency with reporting procedures.
Ability to work collaboratively with SFMOMA colleagues and the public.
Demonstrated accuracy and ability to concentrate on details.
Demonstrated punctuality and dependability.
Ability to meet deadlines and prioritize work.
Ability to handle difficult customer service issues and bring them to an effective resolution with tact and diplomacy.
Superior communication skills, oral and written. Energetic, positive, engaging and approachable demeanor.
Experience using, standard office equipment, and Microsoft Office programs.
Experience scheduling customer service staff.


Physical Demands: Ability to work with a tablet-based touchscreen reservation system. Must be able to sit for extended periods of time. Must be able to move quickly between 4-6 locations in response to service and staff needs.
