In the middle of Melbourne’s main public square one Christmas, a puff of snow drops landed on the ground. Other white elements formed into a giant game of checkers with big smiley faces – an activity with rules understood by most people – while more ground elements cluster to bumper a badminton court. The circular elements are made from white coated rubber, sourced from used car tyres that would otherwise have become landfill.

Whiteout was part of Spirit of the Square, an annual program commissioned by Fed Square over the month of December for the Christmas season.
