These unsettling, sometimes sexually graphic but also poignant and emotionally revelatory images are drawn from informal portrait (and self-portrait) sihoots over the past four years which Ms. Dooney used as source material for her iconic, large-scale glossy, enamel-on-board paintings depicting powerful, empowered, sexy women – her dress-up-doll-like Dangerous Career Babes – as well as more recent oil-on-canvas portraits of sex workers and ‘adult entertainers’. This will be the first time Ms. Dooney has exhibited works in a medium other than painting.
Hazel Dooney is one of Australia’s most famous young female painters. She has exhibited in solo and group shows in major cities all over Australia, as well as in the USA, Japan, and England. Named by Vogue Australia as one of Australia’s rising international stars, her early enamel paintings were a highlight of a recent auction of Australian contemporary art at Christie’s in London.
