—Tony Ellwood Director, National Gallery of Victoria

Before his unexpected death at the age of 48, Howard Arkley (1951–1999) was one of Australia’s leading artists at home and abroad. Over his 25 year career he held numerous solo and group exhibitions and in the year of his death represented Australia at the prestigious Venice Biennale. Heavily influenced by pop art and his fascination with suburban Australian homes, Actual Fractual 1994 belongs to Arkley’s Pointillist Suburb series, which he described in 1997 as ‘my best work to date’.
