For more than three decades, in her own work, she has explored the mysterious and alchemical nature of materials and objects. Across her sculptures and installations, she displays an experimental approach to materials that has been influenced by art povera, dada and constructivism. She is interested in the occult and in the ability of her work to express ideas of uncertainty and instability.

Recently acquired for the MCA Collection, Mikala Dwyer’s empty and drooping Square Cloud Compound (2010), is made of large swathes of coloured fabric sewed into cubes that create a type of floating soft architectural form. The patch-worked construction is held down by tersely pulled stockings attached to the floor and to painted poles with lights and trinkets that function like totem poles. Square Cloud Compound is presented alongside a new wall painting produced especially for the MCA Collection.
