German artists Anselm Kiefer and Gerhard Richter and Americans Jean-Michel Basquiat and Clyfford Still are also represented, and sculpture by Basque artists Eduardo Chillida and Jorge Oteiza is set in an international context.

In addition, Masterpieces from the Guggenheim Bilbao Collection includes several canvases from Francesco Clemente’s cycle Mother’s Room (1995–97). A site-specific project originally created for Gallery 203 at the Guggenheim Bilbao, this work is now being exhibited in a different space to give visitors a new perspective on it. The exhibition also presents several works that reflect painting’s return to figuration in the 1980s, while other pieces are characterized by a determination to recover pictorial expressiveness, such as Miquel Barceló’s Flood (1990).
