curated by Clare Needham

MUM draws together a group of artists ruminating on notions of motherhood. Sidestepping and in some cases entirely subverting common tropes of the hallowed mother, their responses are raw, playful, often absurd and at times confronting. Featuring artists Catherine Bell, Clare Rae, Ilona Nelson, Erika Gofton, Nina Ross, Kate Just, Hanna Tai and Meredith Turnbull & Roma Turnbull-Coulter.

Art Exhibition previously on in Victoria, Australia.
From Saturday 11 June 2016 to Sunday 03 July 2016
Launch Saturday 11 June 2016, 4:30PM

While not conceived to be overtly political, MUM gives a nod to the feminist catch-cry, ‘The personal is political’ making connections between personal experience and broader social and political structures. Each work is a personal exploration of the primal exchange of raising another life and the physical and psychological evolution this entails; embracing the joy, grief, anxiety and chaos of motherhood and everything in-between. No sappy Hallmark sentiments here, like the ‘pin-up’ mother of lifestyle magazines, but a raw and honest exploration of a collection of artists’ personal realities that visually articulate common and shared experiences.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Kyneton-based independent theatre maker Sarah Lockwood and playwright Tahli Corin will present a new performance which will explore the chasm between the expectation and reality of motherhood. This new work will be performed exclusively at Stockroom as part of the exhibition opening event on Saturday 11 June from 4:30pm.
