In State of the Nation six sovereign artists who live on Kulin and Eora countries – Paola Balla, Megan Cope, Hannah Donnelly, Steven Rhall, Arika Waulu and Jason Wing – have come together on Wurundjeri land to critique and challenge the status quo of the singular country called ‘Australia’ and the myth of a ‘young and free’ society. The artists’ dynamic responses highlight the battles that we as communities are fighting through the broader lens of unresolved rights to lands and waters, but also our very personal struggles of disadvantage, inter-generational trauma and racial vilification. Powerfully voicing our political realities, the artist’s work through protest, cultural authority and future imaginings in order to expose and challenge the state of affairs, and inspire the strength to continue our ancestral legacy as First Peoples.
