Jack Gallery/S2 Art Group, the world leader in limited-edition fine art lithography, and Patrick McDonnell, the creator of the world-famous comic strip MUTTS, distributed internationally by King Features Syndicate, are pleased to announce a celebration of McDonnell’s newest collection of paintings on paper and canvas along with the release of his latest book South, published by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers.

Three special events will be held at Jack Gallery in Los Angeles, located at 3rd and Fairfax on the plaza between Farmers Market and The Grove. In conjunction with Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, a public book signing and art showing is scheduled for October 17, 2008 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. In addition, an exhibition benefiting the YES! on Prop 2 campaign to stop animal cruelty will be open to the public from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on October 18. Patrick McDonnell will be in attendance for each event.

Artist and author Patrick McDonnell commented on the upcoming events, “I’m enthused to be exhibiting new artwork based on my latest MUTTS book, while promoting a cause dear to my heart. Jack Gallery has enabled two of my passions, art and animals, to be highlighted at these events.”

The activities on October 18 in particular are being held to raise awareness and funding for passing Proposition 2, a proposition on California’s statewide ballot that would promote the humane treatment of farm animals and protect food safety. Prop 2 will phase out the inhumane confinement of farm animals in tiny crates and cages where they can barely move for their entire lives on industrial factory farms.

This distinctively humane spirit is evident in every activity undertaken by McDonnell, whose book South and the artwork it inspired underscore the importance of helping those in need. South tells the story of a little bird who awakens to find that his flock is gone, and it takes the surprising aid of Mooch, the cat, to help him find his way. A wordless tale that is equally humorous and poignant, the unspoken language of sharing and comfort is all that is needed for these two different species to communicate. Painting in a warm, elegant brushwork style, Patrick McDonnell has crafted a beautiful story of being lost and found, crossing boundaries, and saying goodbye.

At the heart of the exhibition are nearly 50 unique works of art created by Patrick McDonnell, including a collection of paintings on paper and canvas and ink and watercolor drawings. Nearly all of the images are reminiscent of the graceful artwork encountered in South, and nearly all focus on Earl and Mooch, the two most recognizable characters from McDonnell’s popular MUTTS comic strip.

Also on exhibit will be four fine art lithographs hand-signed by Patrick McDonnell that were created at the prestigious S2 Editions Atelier. These lithographs were created on 19th century Marinoni Voirin lithography presses that require a highly skilled team of artisans to create each image. To create one lithograph, the image must be redrawn and hand-pulled through the press.

As a whole, the exhibition takes a broad and inclusive look at the versatility of McDonnell’s artistic style. A portion of all sales of McDonnell’s artwork made on October 18 will benefit the YES! on Prop 2 campaign. In addition, McDonnell has provided four paintings (1 acrylic on canvas, 3 acrylic on paper) for which the entire proceeds will benefit the YES! on Prop 2 campaign.

High-resolution images are available for use in print publications.
