Marco Polo Junior versus the Red Dragon

In this first ever Australian animation film, the descendant of Marco Polo (voiced by American teen idol Bobby Rydell) embarks on a fantastic quest to the mythical Xanadu in order to recover the missing piece of a long lost medallion. Standing in his way is the evil Red Dragon who wants the medallion for his own nefarious purposes.

Recently restored by the National Film and Sound Archive, this spirited animation has all the right ingredients – an epic quest, a feisty princess, a bumbling dragon and a dastardly villain.

For its time the film was a huge undertaking, enlisting over 100 animators to complete but sadly failed to receive international distribution, only managing a limited Australian release, meaning that it was essentially lost and forgotten. It did however appear on TV in 1976 under a different name (The Magic Medallion) and had a brief re-release in 2002 as Marco Polo: Return to Xanadu.

Transferred from an original 35mm negative, this lovingly restored version should delight animation buffs and fill in a vital missing piece of Australian film history.

Winner: Best Director at the 1973 Australian Film Institute Awards (now the AACTA Awards)
