Natalie Mather is a prolific painter with an active practice and a multitude of accolades to her young career. She has been a multiple award finalist and has most recently received the Highly Commended Award for her entry into the A1 Darebin Art Prize. Mather’s work was featured in several publications and has been widely collected.

This pivotal show for the artist will encompass a series of elegiac paintings, which both obscure and illuminate Mather’s underlying preoccupation with the themes of death, beauty and the quandary in being an emerging contemporary painter.

In a challenge to the Duchampian notion that “painting is dead” Mather’s intensely captivating works are a testament to the contrary. Coinciding on the heels of a stimulation of this medium with shows like “Painting. More Painting.” at ACCA and the subsequent discourse, Mather’s unique take on the artwork-viewer relationship is explored in her curatorial process of this series.

Part performance and part installation Death Majestic places the viewers into a new relationship with the tradition of painting by shifting perspectives and adding an element of curiosity.

Opening event: 6-8pm, Friday 28 October 2016
