The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, announce the initial line-up for the third year of their bicoastal collaboration on The Contenders, MoMA’s annual end-of-year series that offers filmgoers the opportunity to see recently released films that are bound for awards glory or destined to become cult classics, often accompanied by rare post-screening discussions with filmmakers and actors.

Opening the series at MoMA on November 10 is Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival (2016), featuring a post-screening conversation with stars Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner. The film follows a linguist who must lead a team of investigators trying to communicate with extraterrestrial visitors. Tickets for the MoMA screenings go on sale two weeks prior to each screening at 9:30 a.m. at The Museum of Modern Art and online at moma.org.

Opening the series at the Hammer Museum on December 1 is Loving (2016), written and directed by Jeff Nichols and starring Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga; Nichols and Edgerton will participate in a post-screening discussion. Loving tells the story of interracial couple Richard and Mildred Loving, whose courage and commitment paved the way for marriage equality.
