In view of the growing importance of Italian design, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Cultural and Environmental Heritage and ITA – Italian Trade Agency, has proclaimed the 2nd of March 2017 (just before Milan’s Furniture Fair, 4-9 April 2017) Italian Design Day. According to recent data, Italian design sector generates in its entirety a 46.8 million turnover and employs 995,000 people between direct and indirect activities: in total, it represents 2.9% of national GDP and 4.5% of the workforce. Hence the emphasis given to this important sector of creativity and entrepreneurial spirit Made in Italy.

On this day 100 cities all over the world will host roundtables hosting an “Italian design ambassador” selected among the big names of Italian design, entrepreneurs, critics, academics, communicators and “Under 35” designers. These ambassadors will illustrate the history and the new tendencies of a sector whose accomplishments and planning skills have produced outstanding and unique results.

Upon their return to Italy these “ambassadors” will recommend the results achieved in the country they have visited in the fields of craftsmanship, technological innovations, building methods, materials etc.), share them and verify possibilities of project contaminations.

The Italian design day will not be limited to the roundtable, but in all the cities a video will also be screened illustrating the structure of the project.

The event will be repeated in March 2018 by broadening even further the research and the selection of the production sectors and of the ‘excellences’. A big exhibition will also be organized in 2018 which will feature all the materials collected, the experiences and the possible collaborations that have been established.

The ambassador for the first Italian Design Day in Sydney will be graphic designer Francesco Cavalli.

Francesco Cavalli’s talk will be followed by a roundtable, introduced by Donatella Cannova, Director of the Italian Cultural Institute in Sydney, and Lisa Cahill, Director of the Australian Design Centre. Participants in the roundtable will be designers Marcus Piper and Catriona Burgess, moderator editor and journalist Penny Craswell.
