The iconic Goggomobil Dart sportscar and distinctive paper darts by Melbourne contemporary realist Robert Clinch come together in this intriguing project resulting in a painted art car. The classic 1960s Dart, an aesthetic object in itself, is transformed to another level, painted with over 60 paper darts. In addition to the car, the exhibition includes paintings and drawings by Robert Clinch.
Robert Clinch’s hyper-real paintings and works on paper depicting urban Melbourne often feature paper darts, which have become somewhat of a signature motif. Teaming with classic car collector, Jeff Brown, to conceive this project, Robert has transformed a Goggomobil Dart car by painting over 60 paper darts over the surface. No two darts are the same and are grouped together in a way that is suggestive of a multitude of narratives, revealed through titles of the artworks in the exhibition, such as d’Artagnan or Traffic. The Goggomobil was named and designed by Bill Buckle who thought ‘Dart’ summed up the good-looking little sportscar. The sense of flight and fun implied by paper darts is a perfect fit for the Dart car.
The Goggomobil D’art Project will be unveiled on Saturday 25th March at Lauraine Diggins Fine Art and in addition to the car, the exhibition includes Robert’s paintings and drawings along with a preview of a forthcoming documentary by Karl von Moller about the project.
