Tisna majored in printmaking at the Bandung Institute of Technology, from which he graduated in 1986 at a time of political and social unrest. He holds a Diploma and Masters of Fine Art from the Braunschweig University of Art (Germany) and a PhD from the ISI JOGJA (Indonesia). Tisna has exhibited works in a number of major exhibitions and venues across the world, including but not limited to the Venice Biennale, Gwangju Biennale, Jakarta Biennale, Asia-Pacific Triennale, Singapore Biennale, Yogyakarta Biennale, Musee Palais de Tokyo and the National Gallery Jakarta.

For Tisna, art gains its greatest legitimacy through a direct connection with people. He uses painting, print and performance to consider environment, politics and religion from both a local and global perspective.

This SITUATE residency is a three-way partnership between RMIT, Multicultural Arts Victoria, and Project 11. The principle aim of this project is to connect people through art by creating a place for experimentation and cross-cultural dialogue.
