The winners of this year's Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award won't be announced until 14th August, but one of the 93 pre-selected artists already has cause for celebration.

Jean Baptiste Apuatimi – mother of 11 and widow of artist Declan Apuatimi – has just returned from London where the Rebecca Hossack Gallery hosted her first international solo exhibition.

The exhibition, “Tapalinga” (star), was complimented by the British Museum’s acquisition of one of Apuatimi’s pieces Tumulangini, natural pigments on paper.

The Telstra Art Award is a non-acquisitive award. Winners will be announced on Friday, 14 August 2009 at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, and works will be on display until Sunday, 25 October 2009. For more information go to www.magnt.nt.gov.au/natsiaa
