Held every two years, the Biennale of Sydney is Australia’s much-anticipated major contemporary art event.

Curated by Stephanie Rosenthal, this latest edition focuses on how the common distinction between the virtual and the physical has become ever more elusive. The 20th Biennale will be structured around thematic clusters with each participating venue designated as a transient home for particular constellations of thought. Works at the Art Gallery of NSW are set to make the spirits soar. The Biennale first exhibited at the Gallery in 1976, and with this upcoming 20th edition we celebrate 40 years of continuous association.

Venues will also include Sydney’s leading experimental spaces, and Cockatoo Island – the largest island in Sydney Harbour – will again feature, as will a number of alternative non-museum venues.
