The Australia Council for the Arts is deeply saddened by the passing of Australian actor and theatre director Malcolm Robertson.

Mr Robertson began his theatre career in 1951 as an actor touring Australia with the John Alden Shakespeare Company. In 1954, he joined the Union Theatre Repertory Company (the precursor to the Melbourne Theatre Company), where he became Associate Director from 1972.

Australia Council Director, Theatre Marion Potts said Mr Robertson played a vital role in developing a confident Australian voice for the main stage.

“Malcolm’s legacy and love of strong, imaginative and authentic text-based work has benefitted an entire generation of playwrights, directors, actors, dramaturgs and audiences.

“The Australia Council extends its deepest sympathies to Mr Robertson’s family.”

A celebration of Malcolm Robertson’s life will be held on Monday, 1 February at Malthouse Theatre at 4pm.
