Anouska Phizacklea has been appointed as the new Director of the Monash Gallery of Art (MGA) and Natasha Bowness is the new Chair of the MGA Committee of Management.

Anouska joins MGA from Heide Museum of Modern Art, where she held the role of Finance, Business and HR Manager and is a member of the Senior Executive Team. Previous roles include Finance and Operations Manager at the Australian Centre of Contemporary Art (ACCA) and working in art research and valuations at Nevill Keating McIlroy and galleries and auction houses in London.

Anouska has a strong art and finance background, with Masters degrees in both Art and Commerce. She is a Certified Practicing Accountant and a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. She has been appointed following a comprehensive executive search by Monash Council and the Monash Gallery of Art Committee of Management and will start in July 2017.

Monash Mayor Rebecca Paterson said both women would bring broad ranging skills and energy to their roles.

“We are delighted to welcome Anouska to MGA to lead the gallery and build on its excellent reputation developed over 27 years as Australia’s home of photography,” Cr Paterson said.

Anouska said she was excited to be joining MGA as its new Director.

“It is an exceptional collection and its reputation as one of Australia’s leading photography galleries provides an exhilarating platform to explore photographic practice. It’s an exciting prospect to work with an outstanding team and the community of Monash as we create stimulating encounters with arts and culture and deepen MGA’s engagement with local, national and global audiences,” she said.

Cr Paterson said Council was also delighted to welcome Natasha to her role as Chair.

“Natasha brings to her role of Chair her significant experience in commerce, philanthropy, the arts and the not for profit sector. She has strong leadership skills and great passion for the arts,” Cr Paterson said.

Natasha has had a long association with the gallery through her family’s philanthropic support and as a past resident of Monash.

Natasha is on the Board of Wilbow Group and Zoos Victoria and is President of Annual Giving for the Australian Ballet and Chair of the Bowness Family Foundation.

“It is such a privilege to accept the role as Chair. We have an outstanding collection and gallery and a talented and enthusiastic team,” Natasha said.

“I look forward to building both the MGA’s and photography’s profile, reach and reputation within the Monash community as well as nationally and internationally.”

Cr Paterson also paid tribute to the work of the previous Chair Alan McLean and thanked him for his 11 year commitment to MGA including the last four years as Chair.
