Anthony White has been selected as a participant in the 2017 International Painting Symposium at the Mark Rothko Art Centre in Latvia from 11-22 September 2017.

The Symposium draws from both international and European-based artists and will take place at the Mark Rothko Art Centre at the Arsenale Fortress, in Daugavpils, Latvia – the town of Rothko’s birth.

This unique structured residency at the Mark Rothko Art Centre where the artists will participate in a transcultural environment to critically engage with ideas central to the Abstract Expressionist visual arts practice. The symposium provides a space to explore and debate the role and purposes of contemporary art. White also aims to discuss his practise with other participants during the symposium.

Two works created by White during the residency will be acquired by the Mark Rothko Art Centre and displayed in the permanent collection.
White’s recent work considers collision points, shifts and ruptures at the site of geopolitical and cultural boundaries, particularly in relation to global immigration crises; echoing Edward Said’s identification of “the inextricable links” between Modernism, war and immigration. White’s works are often characterised by an awareness of surface and a preoccupation with physicality and the found object.

A dominant area of research in his work has been concerned with the phenomenon of Empires: How do empires construct narratives to promote and propagate ideology? How are notions of ownership tied to a European point of view? And how can visual artists engage with communities whilst addressing these issues?

As a contemporary art and culture centre, the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre hosts exhibitions dedicated to Mark Rothko’s artwork and biography, and rotating exhibitions from well-known international and national artists, as well as cultural history.

The final symposium exhibition, including White’s work, will open at the Mark Rothko Art Centre, Daugavpils, on 22 September 2017.
