Highlights for the first week of Art Month Sydney

Sydney, Australia Art Month Sydney, the month-long festival celebrating the contemporary visual arts in Sydney, launches tomorrow night and will run for the full month of March 2011. More than 80 galleries and museums are taking part, offering over 120 exhibitions and events.

Each week in March a different Arts Precinct will be featured. This week the spotlight is on Danks Street, Waterloo and Redfern with highlight events and galleries including:

Tuesday:
Launch event at The Ivy featuring live artist performance by Tom Polo who will collect snippets of conversation from the crowd and input them into a video projection that screens the phrases as an artwork across the walls of the party.

Wednesday:
Free lunch time talks at the National Art School, 1pm-2pm by artist, curators and industry professionals providing insights into different aspects of contemporary art. The Art Forum series runs every Wednesday lunch time in March.

Free evening panel discussion ‘Collecting in the Age of Investment’ from 6pm at Dominik Mersch Gallery, Danks Street, Waterloo. Panel includes Katrina Strickland (AFR), Geoffrey Cassidy (Artbank), Glenn Barkley (MCA) and Christopher Hodges (Utopia Art Sydney).

Thursday:
Art After Work – galleries in the focus precinct open late with special opening events at several. Gallery Barry Keldoulis launches a new exhibition by Berlin-based Australian artist duo Sean Cordeiro & Claire Healy featuring an installation of hundreds of reconstructed beer bottles titled ‘Drunken Clarity’, whilst BREENSPACE features an exhibition of large-scale assemblages of felt, fabric and canvas by artist Sally Smart titled ‘In her Nature’.

Art Bars – collect a token at any participating gallery (see www.artmonthsydney.com) and receive a free drink at the Art Month Art Bar. Held every Thursday evening offering live DJ music and the chance to meet local artists, the Art Bar this week is hosted at the new premises of Sullivan + Strumpf Fine Art at 779 Elizabeth St, Zetland. This week’s Art Bar features performances by exhibiting artist and musician Darren Sylvester, Jacqui Cunningham and artist Arlene Texta Queen.

Friday:
Rest day (recovery from Art After Work and Art Bars).

Saturday:
Free art talks all day between 11am and 4pm at galleries in the focus precinct. Highlights include Inspiring Collecting talk on Video Art at Gallery Barry Keldoulis, Collecting on the secondary market talk at Annette Larkin Fine Art, artist Darren Sylvester talks about his new photographic and embroidery works at Sullivan + Strumpf Fine Art; visiting Swiss artist Beat Zoderer talks about his site specific installation and works at Dominik Mersch Gallery, gallery talk about exhibition of young neon artist Brendan Van Hek at Anna Schwartz Gallery and artist talk with Dean Manning at Damien Minton Gallery.

ARTcycle – free guided tours (11am – 6pm) of the featured arts precinct by bicycle, this week led by Mickie Quick, host of ‘On yer bike’ at FBi Radio.

Sunday:
Artist open studios for artists Michael Snape (10am) and Peter Alwast (2pm). Refer to www.artmonthsydney.com to register attendance.
