FundBreak is an exciting platform designed to facilitate crowd-funding of creative projects.

To see how it works, take a look at this project which an Artabase artist Amanda Van Gils is currently seeking funding for. Amanda is curating an exhibition to be held at the Art Gallery of Ballarat. The show brings together 38 artists who make use of the internet to develop their artistic career or practice.

People who donate to the project can receive ‘Rewards’, which in the case of this exhibition vary depending on the amount donated, ranging from invites to the opening, through to some of the artworks in the show. Check out the full list of rewards for this project here.

The project has achieved 28% of its funding target, but it must achieve the full 100% of required funding within the allocated timeframe (the deadline for this project is 26 November, 2010) if its to receive funding at all.

If the project achieves its funding target, the pledged money is transferred to Amanda, and she is responsible for ensuring that the donators receive their rewards. If the project doesn’t meet its target, funds pledged are returned to the donators.

Personally, I’d like to see a little more flexibility with this funding model. If the project almost meets its target, Amanda could probably still make use of the funds, perhaps by cutting some corners, eg by making a smaller run of the catalogue. Perhaps a minimum/maximum target would work a little better. All up it’s a fantastic project though, sure to help artists worldwide.
