Sydney, Australia: Respected Australian art identity Barry Keldoulis has been appointed CEO and Group Fairs Director of Art Fairs Australia Pty Ltd, the presenting company behind the new Sydney Contemporary art fair, launching this September, and the Melbourne Art Fair.

Tim Etchells, founder of Art Fairs Australia, commented on the appointment: “Barry’s extensive knowledge of the Australian and international art scene will make him invaluable in helping us develop both Sydney Contemporary and the Melbourne Art Fair.”

“With more than three decades experience in the industry working around the globe, Barry has a first-hand understanding of the makings of a successful art fair, having attended innumerable international fairs, both as an observer and a participant, throughout North America, the UK, Europe and Australia including ArtHK, Art Stage Singapore and Frieze in his capacity as gallery director of GBK,” said Etchells.

The first focus for Keldloulis is to oversee Sydney Contemporary, the major new biennial contemporary art fair being presented for the first time at Eveleigh-based arts institution Carriageworks from 20th until 22nd September 2013, with a Vernissage to be hosted on the evening of Thursday 19th September.

Sydney Contemporary and the Melbourne Art Fair will be presented on a biennial basis in alternate years, commencing with Sydney Contemporary this September and followed by the Melbourne Art Fair in 2014.

The inaugural Sydney Contemporary will follow the successful launch of a new modern and contemporary art fair called Art13 London, by Etchells’ company SME London Ltd. Presented from 1st until 3rd March 2013, Art13 London featured galleries from 30 countries, attracting 24,735 visitors over three days, including both new and local collectors from Asia, Europe and the USA who visited the Olympia Grand Hall in Kensington, London.

Etchells is also co-founder of ART HK, the Hong Kong international art fair, one of the world’s most respected and successful at fairs. In 2012, ART HK was partly acquired by Art Basel and now operates as Art Basel HK.

Sydney Contemporary will cater to both experienced and new art collectors with more than 60 leading Australian and international galleries presenting work by established and emerging artists. It will celebrate the work of artists across a diverse range of mediums with a focus on global trends that span the modern and contemporary timeline and include painting, photography, works on paper, sculpture as well as featuring performance and video.

Art Fairs Australia would like to thank Francesca Valmorbida for laying the foundations of the art fair and for forging relationships with Sydney’s most exciting cultural institutions including Carriageworks where the Fair now resides. We wish her well with her next endeavour.
