This year’s winner of the International Welde Art Award for Photography 2013 is German photographer Susa Templin. Her series “Upside down Cities” convinced the jury. Also shortlisted were Johanna Diehl, Axel Hoedt, Niko Luoma, Susa Templin, Heinrich Voelkel.

Susa Templin (born 1965) is fascinated with urban structures. She photographs urban spaces and landscapes, and edits the recordings in the studio. Photographs are folded, cut, painted, glued and reassembled to create plastic models.

Thus, new visual spaces, so-called “Proposals for cities,” allow Templin to design a new transformation of urban space.

“In my models and installations, I create a collage of reality. I use the artificiality and my imagination to create a new, free space” said Templin.

Born in Hamburg, Templin became known in the 1990s, with a high-contrast black and white series. In 1996, she lived for almost ten years in New York. Today Templin, whose works have been exhibited internationally, lives and works in Berlin and Frankfurt.

The WeldeKunstpreis is one of the most prestigious competitions in the German art scene and has been awarded since 1995. 2013 is dedicated to the WeldeKunstpreis of photography.

Art experts from all over Germany have photographers and photographers nominated for the longlist for the price. An independent jury consisting of Florian Ebner (Folkwang Museum, Essen), Freddy Langer (FAZ), Michael Shepherd (Photographer WeldeKunstpreisträger 2011), Schirmböck (ZEPHYR) and Susanne White (Heidelberger Kunstverein) chose the international contributions of five artists (Johanna Diehl, Berlin, Axel Hoedt, London, Niko Luoma, Helsinki, Susa Templin, Berlin, and Heinrich Voelkel, Wiesbaden, Germany) in the shortlist and determined the winner. This year’s “short list” is until 10th of May 2013 at the offices of the Volksbank spa and Rhine Palatinate, Speyer (Bahnhofstrasse 19, 67346 Speyer).

The International WeldeKunstpreis for photography is endowed with 5,000 euros and a winners exhibition in the gallery ZEPHYR. The gallery is also a production subsidy (for image catalog or production) in the amount of 2,500 euros. The audience prize is € 500.
