We are delighted to announce Chris Saines, Director of the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) will judge the $15,000 SWELL Sculpture Award.

The SWELL Sculpture Award is sponsored by the City of Gold Coast and this year 70 artists will be in the running for the $15,000 cash award.

We are thrilled to have Chris Saines judging the major award as his involvement will add depth to an already exciting festival. We are very much looking forward to Chris’s response to the unique interplay of sculptures set amongst the dunes, sand and rocky outcrops of our picturesque Currumbin Beach.

“The SWELL Sculpture Festival is a wonderful celebration of our spectacular natural environment and vibrant cultural community,” announces City of Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate. “It is a real coup to secure the discerning eye of Chris Saines and it is a privilege to support the SWELL Sculpture Award as a gesture of gratitude to the 70 artists who will transform the southern Gold Coast in September.”

SWELL affords artists a platform to showcase their works and to develop a critical and ongoing connection with an ever growing audience. The award pays homage to the artists’ voice and the way in which art can expand thinking and create conversations that may not be necessarily be held in the everyday.

“It’s my pleasure to be involved with this significant sculpture prize, part of an international trend of awards and exhibitions that present three-dimensional artworks in dialogue with open-air landscapes and coastlines,” states Chris Saines, “I’m especially looking forward to seeing this year’s entries set against the beautiful Currumbin beach.”
