The Substation Contemporary Art Prize 2014 judges Max Delany (Senior Curator Contemporary Art, NGV) and Mark Feary, (Curator, Artspace, Sydney) have awarded the 2014 Substation Contemporary Art Prize to Melbourne based artist Nathan Gray for his multi-screen video and sound installation work Species of Spaces.

The judges’ decision was unanimous.

The judges commented upon the exhibition and winning work as follows:

“Nathan Gray’s Species of Spaces is an impressive immersive presentation that incorporates multiple elements. The work displays a sophisticated and refined sense of sound and image composition, and, drawing upon the artist’s ongoing engagement with sculpture and performance, produces a lively and poetic engagement between the work and the world, and between image, sound and performance.”

“Conceived originally for an industrial space on Cockatoo Island for the Biennale of Sydney, the work is equally well situated within the residual architecture of The Substation."

The judges were “…impressed with the ambition and diversity of the work in the exhibition, which represents the full scope of contemporary art practice, from performance and socially engaged practice to painting, sculpture, and various photography and digital media practices.”

The judges acknowledged the high calibre of the work in the exhibition, and congratulate all of the artists for their inspiring contributions.

With 40 finalists from across Australia and a diversity of mediums – from performance to video, sculpture and painting – this year’s exhibition features artists working across themes of formalism, social, political and environmental themes.
