The Australia Council for the Arts is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Prime Minister, the Honourable Edward Gough Whitlam AC QC.

Australia Council Chair Rupert Myer AM said Mr Whitlam made an enormous contribution to the arts in Australia, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.

“At its meeting in Brisbane today, the Board of the Australia Council for the Arts acknowledged with gratitude the decisive role that Gough Whitlam played in the establishment of the Council as a separate statutory body,” Mr Myer said.

“His vision for the transformative impact of the arts and for the centrality of artists in decision-making processes has guided the Council for more than four decades.

“On behalf of the Council, I extend our sympathies to the Whitlam family.”
