As he faced execution, Myuran Sukumaran received his official Associate Degree in Fine Art from Curtin University. Sukumaran started the fine art degree by Open Universities while in jail in Bali on death row. Myuran was one of the "Bali 9": Australians convicted of drug-smuggling charges.

Although Australia abolished capital punishment in 1984, a legal loophole allowed the Australian Federal Police to hand over the Bali 9 to Indonesian Police, because they were only ‘suspected’ of crimes. Had they already been convicted while still on Australian soil, the Federal Police would have been prevented, by law, from handing its citizens to a country which uses the death penalty.
